The homicide of 31-year-old Maurice Wilson Miller, of Elmsford, took place around 4 p.m., Thursday, June 17, at 33 Fisher Court in the Winbrook area of White Plains, said, White Plains Police Commissioner David Chong.
White Plains officers immediately responded to the scene and offered emergency aid to Miller who had been shot once in the chest, Chong said.
He was transported to White Plains Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Within a short time after the killing, the department began receiving tips and calls from community members of Windbrook "who do not put up with shooting and violence in their community," Chong said.
The tips led detectives directly to a suspect who was found with help from the community walking along Post Road around 8 p.m. Thursday.
The suspect, Shakar A. Lerke, age 52, of White Plains, was arrested and is being held pending arraignment on Friday, June 18.
Chong said they plan to charge Lerke with:
- Murder
- Manslaughter
- Criminal possession of a firearm
- Criminal use of a firearm
Chong said the two men allegedly had an ongoing dispute that resulted in the shooting.
"I commend the community of Winbrook for not tolerating gun violence and working so closely with law enforcement," Chong said. "That help led directly to the arrest."
